Powered by pulse detonation rocket engine technology, Pratt & Whitney's SHOCKSystem™ is a beneficial and cost-cutting boiler cleaning solution.

Improves Boiler Efficiency: Removes Ash, Reduces Emissions
Fouling, bridging and platenization degrade efficiency by choking the boiler, resulting in less than optimal operating and exit gas temperatures. The SHOCKSystem™ has proven effective in the reduction and removal of various types of ash deposits from boiler regions, thereby allowing gas to flow freely, resulting in improved boiler efficiency. The SHOCKSystem™ has also been shown to positively impact plant emissions. Also See: How it Works, Ash, Emissions Reduction, Shock Stories

Improved Boiler Efficiency Results in Significant Yearly Savings
A 30 MW increase in capacity in a 50 MW boiler equals more than $8 million per year in savings. While the same increase in a 300 MW boiler tops $9 million per year in savings. Also See: Economic Benefits

Improves Plant Availability:
The SHOCKSystem™ cleans while the boiler remains online, eliminating the need for cleaning outages. The blast waves created by the SHOCKSystem™ are tube-friendly, meaning no forced outages due to tube leaks. Also See: Eliminating Outages

Decreases Plant O&M Costs:
The SHOCKSystem's™ ability to clean during normal boiler operations reduces operating costs associated with offline cleaning. The SHOCKSystem™ does not burden valuable plant resources such as steam or high pressure air supplies, resulting in significantly lower cost of operation. Tube-friendly, the SHOCKSystem™ eliminates boiler down time caused by tube erosion. Also See: Operating and Maintenance Costs, Tube Erosion White Paper

Non-Line-Of-Sight Cleaning Power:
An improvement over traditional sootblowing technology, the large cleaning radius of the blast wave produced by the SHOCKSystem™ can remove ash accumulation from those tough to reach spots. Also See: Sootblowing Technologies, Cleaning Process

Simple Maintenance:
The SHOCKSystem™ uses a simple design that requires fewer components to be installed, operated and managed by the control system. This simplicity is designed to match the extremely low cost of operating the non-erosive combustors repeatedly. Maintenance consists of a spark plug and gas filters. Also See: Operating and Maintenance Costs, Main Subsystems

Installation Flexibility:
The SHOCKSystem™ can be installed along any boiler wall unlike retractable sootblowers which generally are only installed along boiler side walls. The SHOCKSystem™ combustors can be configured straight or bent. The bent tube configuration requires less than 10 feet of space from boiler walls enabling installation along boiler front and rear walls. In comparison, a retractable sootblower can require as much as 55 feet of space from boiler side wall. Also See: Installation Flexibility
