SHOCK STORY: PRIMARY SUPERHEAT DEMONSTRATION
Current Situation:
600+ MW Boiler
  • Burns a blend of Powder River Basin (PRB) and Bituminous Coal
  • Heavily sintered platenization in the primary superheater (PSH) tube bundles leading to lower heat transfer efficiency in the PSH with resulting high boiler exit gas temperature
Solution:
  • Installed SHOCKSystem™ between the upper and lower primary superheater bundles
  • Utilized an existing manway opening on the east wall
Performance:
  • Operation resulted in significant ash collection in hopper; indicating successful removal of built up ash from primary superheater
  • Video confirmed built up platenization was removed from the gas lanes
SHOCKSystem's™ Bottom-Line Impact:
  • Holding hopper loading indicated significant ash removed
  • Local instrumentation data showed decrease in primary superheater exit gas temperature by 45°F
  • Plant data showed east side economizer exit temperature was lower by 5°F to 10°F compared to west side
  • Photo survey indicated platenization was removed from primary superheater tube bundles
  • Led to a proposal for installation
