The SHOCKSystem™ successfully removed baked-on ash deposits, as well as cleared vertical bridging/platenization between tube rows.

SHOCK STORY: ECONOMIZER DEMONSTRATION
Current Situation:
550 MW Boiler
  • Burns a blend of Powder River Basin (PRB) and Bituminous Coal
  • Relatively clean Economizer with occasional platenization; Primary Superheater shows more fouling than Economizer
  • Unit 1 exhibits fouling in the two Primary Superheater bundles and two Economizer bundles in the backpass
  • Platenization (i.e. vertical blockage of the backpass tubes) degrades boiler efficiency and raises economizer exit gas temperature above the allowable 700°F
  • Det-cord blasting is required for removing the platenization
  • Some ash piles are also present but are a minor concern
Solution:
  • Installed a demonstration combustor on the Upper & Lower Economizer Bundles
  • Utilized an existing manway opening on the South Side Wall
Performance:
  • The SHOCKSystem™ was operated intermittently and with varying power levels
  • Low exit temperatures seen in the two month timeframe which corresponds with the SHOCKSystem™ operation period
SHOCKSystem's™ Bottom-Line Impact:
  • Economizer exit temperatures on the demo side dropped relative to corresponding exit temperatures on the other side in direct correlation to the power and timing of SHOCKSystem™ operations
  • Economizer exit temperatures dropped by 30°F after on date which corresponds with first day of operation
  • Economizer exit temperatures on both sides were 20°F- 30°F lower in two month timeframe which corresponds with the operation period
  • Variance seen in economizer exit temperatures was smaller during the periods when the SHOCKSystem™ was operated

Economizer Exit Temperature South Histogram
Equal number of data points used for before and during operation
Histograms comparing South Side economizer exit temperatures before and during SHOCKSystem™ operation period shows lower exit temperatures and smaller standard deviation in exit temperatures during SHOCKSystem™ operation period.

Standard deviation during four-day SHOCKSystem™ operation: 5.5
Four-day standard deviation before SHOCKSystem™ operation: 12
