SHOCK STORY: ECONOMIZER HEAT TRANSFER PERFORMANCE DEMO
Current Situation:
500+ MW boiler
  • Burns 100% Power River Basin (PRB) Coal
  • Boiler is base loaded
  • A decline in economizer heat transfer performance causes exit gas temperature to increase over time
Solution:
  • A combustor was installed between the upper and middle economizer bundle
  • Utilized an existing manway opening located on the left side
  • The penetration was 10' 6" from the right sidewall
Performance:
  • Removed upper economizer platenization from tube rows more than 15' from left side wall
  • Removed lower economizer platenization from tube rows more than 30' from left side wall
  • Middle economizer was not heavily platenized prior to demonstration
  • Analyzed ash accumulations in the hoppers before, during and after demonstration
  • Operation resulted in significant left side wall hopper loading; indicating successful removal of built-up ash from the left side of the economizer
  • Left side wall gas temperature leaving the economizer decreased by more than 50°F
SHOCKSystem's™ Bottom-Line Impact:
  • Demonstrated ability to clean the economizer tube rows
  • Showed improvement in the economizer exit gas temperature
  • Demonstration lead to an installation proposal
