SHOCK STORY: HORIZONTAL REHEATER DEMONSTRATION
Current Situation:
650+ MW Boiler
  • Burns a blend of Powder River Basin (PRB) and Bituminous Coal
  • Ash deposition in the horizontal reheater causes:

  •     - tube leaks in the reheater due to sootblower erosion leading to forced outages
        - draft loss
        - increase in boiler exit gas temperature
Solution:
  • Installed SHOCKSystem™ between middle and lower horizontal reheater bundles
  • Utilized an existing manway opening located on the west wall
Performance:
  • First two days of operation resulted in significant ash collection in holding hopper; indicating successful removal of built up ash from horizontal reheater
SHOCKSystem's™ Bottom-Line Impact:
  • Photo survey indicated removal of platenization from horizontal reheater tube bundles
  • Holding hopper loading indicated significant ash removed from horizontal reheater tube bundles
  • Gas temperature differential across middle and lower reheater increased during SHOCKSystem™ operation by 20°F to 30°F
  • Economizer exit gas temperature on SHOCKSystem™ side decreased by 10°F to 20°F compared to other side
  • Horizontal reheater cleanliness factor increased noticeably during SHOCKSystem™ operation
  • Led to proposal
