The pulse detonation technology behind the SHOCKSystem™ successfully removed built up ash from the horizontal reheater, resulting in increased economizer operating temperature and decreased exit gas temperature.
 
SHOCK STORY: ECONOMIZER STAGGERED FIN DEMONSTRATION
Current Situation:
600+ MW boiler
  • Burns a blend of Powder River Basin (PRB) and Bituminous Coal
  • Ash pile growth on upper economizer (staggered fin tube) along front wall cannot be removed by existing half retract sootblower
  • Results in high boiler exit gas temperature and frequent cleaning outages
Solution:
  • Installed a demonstration combustor above the upper economizer
  • Removed a Half Retract Sootblower that was occupying a manway
  • Utilized newly opened manway for the combustor
Performance:
  • Operation occurred over eight day shifts
  • Economizer temperature differential increased during cleaning events
  • Video confirmed pluggage removed from gas lanes
Bottom-Line Impact:
  • Hopper loading indicated significant ash removed from economizer tube bundles
  • Local instrumentation data showed 50°F increases in gas temperature differential across upper economizer
  • Economizer exit gas temperature on SHOCKSystem™ side decreased by 10°F compared to other side
  • Led to a proposal
